OUTSIDER ART FAIR 2023 | March 2–5, 2023 | BOOTH D10

Featuring David Syre

SARAHCROWN is proud to participate in the 2023 edition of Outsider Art Fair New York, the only fair dedicated to self-taught art, art brut and outsider art, taking place March 2 – 5, 2023 at the Metropolitan Pavilion in Manhattan. Our booth will feature the drawings of American outsider artist David Syre.

Synchronously, an exhibition of David Syre’s drawings will be on view at SARAHCROWN’s gallery space through the fair, running until April 1, 2023.

A solo representation of Syre’s signature style drawings on black paper, the booth will showcase a selection of 20 drawings. A prolific artist, Syre produced over 4500 drawings to date, and it’s an ever-evolving practice. In art critic Jessica Holmes’s words, “the saturated colors are infused with an added luminescence on the dark page, as are the artist’s strokes, which are simultaneously lush and masterful. Though abstract, the twinned themes of love and space emerge from the artist’s confident line in its suggestions of universes, labyrinths, totems, clowns, and other mythical creatures and places.”

ABOUT THE ARTIST

David Syre is an American outsider artist based in Bellingham, WA. Syre produces large-scale acrylic paintings, drawings, watercolors, and monumental art installations inspired by the subconscious, nature, and his travels.

Syre first started making art with his Swedish grandmother after battling polio at age 4, and, since then, has never stopped –even though he pursued a more traditional career in business development. All his life, art-making was a salvation and an urge to fulfill, and he found inspiration in spirituality that affected his life’s journey, both artistically and personally.

Gaining recognition later in life, Syre has exhibited in various galleries, art fairs, and public spaces throughout his career, including New York, NY; Buenos Aires, Argentina; Nice, France; Hamburg, Germany; Copenhagen, Denmark; Santa Fe, New Mexico, Vancouver, B.C. and Miami, FL. A monograph of his works on paper, The Black Book of Drawings, was published in 2022 by SARAHCROWN New York with essays by critics Jessica Holmes and Peter Frank.
