Fairy Fruit, a new exhibition curated by SARAHCROWN founder Sarah Corona, features five Brooklyn-based artists: Emilia Devitis, Rachel Gregor, Xavier Petromelis, Claudia Santiso, and Anita Trombetta. The exhibition offers itself to the viewer as a place of fiction, a springboard for escapism in a world where reality becomes more and more colorless.
Fairy Fruit will run between October 26, 2020 and January 30, 2021.

The work in Fairy Fruit explores the ways we can see our current reality through a different, otherworldly lens. As celebrated English author Neil Gaiman once said:
Fiction can show you a different world. It can take you somewhere you’ve never been. Once you’ve visited other worlds, like those who ate fairy fruit, you can never be entirely content with the world that you grew up in. Discontent is a good thing: discontented people can modify and improve their worlds, leave them better, leave them different.
Art opens up these other worlds through these artists, and inspires the viewer to think differently about the everyday world that surrounds them. Within the walls of The Yard: Columbus Circle, Fairy Fruit turns into an imaginary landscape, the world of global pandemics and crises temporarily dissolves into a distorted yet more positive version.
Emilia Devitis explores the possibilities of different materials and their outcomes in portraiture, showing a unique, unseen way to look at her subjects and unearthing possible finds in her abstract portraits. Rachel Gregor’s landscape scenes and still life compositions are feminine and dreamlike in their simplicity. Gregor’s paintings cross the boundaries between the extravagant, overly composed, and the mundane. Xavier Petromelis’s works utilize gestures of traditional painting techniques and merge them with an exceptional knowledge of graphic arts in abstraction. Claudia Santiso explores the human obsession and imagination to get out of, or into oneself; to travel through unknown landscapes of distant lands, outer space, and the furthest depths of the ocean through her large-scale, abstract paintings. Anita Trombetta uses everyday objects, warp their dense textures and patterns into sensual, humorous, and often erotic compositions. The objects of the mundane are seen in the way of an architectural expedition from the future. One can see these artists as realists, their works sometimes uncanny and hard to grasp, sometimes abstract, and sometimes figurative; as they offer something contemporarily valuable: in American novelist Ursula K. LeGuin’s words, “realists of a larger reality.”
Due to COVID-19 pandemic, no opening reception will take place for this exhibition, and visits will be available by appointment only. There is also a video tour for guests who aren’t able to visit.
