February 7 – 21, 2023

SARAHCROWN is pleased to announce the launch of our first Flat Files program: a curated selection of works on paper by SARAHCROWN artists. The program is introduced by an online and on-site exhibition, on view between February 7 – 21, 2023. The works can be purchased online or in-person at the gallery.

Traditionally, the term “Flat File” refers to two-dimensional and unframed artworks that can be stored in flat file cabinet drawers, mostly on paper. These works can be drawings, paintings, collages, watercolors, prints, and photographs, while also including smaller scale works on panels or boards. Our own Flat Files contain a diverse range of artists and works from our portfolio, and gather different mediums, approaches, materials, and techniques together to present a coherent, stylized, and an economically accessible option.

The program aims to promote smaller scale works, and give voice to artists who produce two-dimensional works as a significant part of their artistic practice.

Norwegian artist Margrethe Aanestad’s silkscreen prints propose views of nature stripped of all narrative elements, but leaves the compassion present. Elisa Bertaglia, who uses whimsical oil color strokes on paper and flat precious metals, combines line work and meticulously crafted, painterly textures. Leslie Kerby’s drawings, illustrative and thematic, creates a new rhetoric that examines the individual as a complex social product. American outsider artist David Syre’s artistic process is, in many ways, both ritualistic and mindful of the moment: His watercolors explore a meditative, calculated process of painterly composition, but his expression stays bold. Dov Talpaz, who creates abstracted, minimalistic landscapes with his colorful paper collages, uses works on paper both as a jumping board for larger paintings and as original artworks. Sasha Vinci’s large-scale ink works on paper opens a path of communication about nature, humanity, and the Anthropocene through the use of natural materials. Alice Yang’s watercolors are characterized by an abundant white space, and represent the unconscious world.
