William Kim: minimum two ideally never

Exhibition: September 5 - October 19, 2024

Opening Reception: September 13, 6-8 PM

SARAHCROWN is pleased to announce minimum two ideally never, a solo exhibition with German-Korean artist William Kim, where art and perception intertwine to explore themes of intimacy, perspective, and mindful existence.

This is William Kim’s first solo exhibition with the gallery and first solo exhibition in the US.

William Kim’s work is a narrative of mindful exploration and introspection. Their art embodies a journey of peaceful breathing and unfearful freedom, transcending traditional dualities such as body/mind and human/non-human. Kim’s creations are a continuous cycle of movement, embracing both the arrival and departure in a never-ending dance. This perpetual motion challenges conventional understandings and invites viewers to contemplate what exists beyond the boundaries of fixed figures and symbols. In Kim’s world, the concepts of consistency and stability become nomadic, replaced by a compassionate and joyful presence that encompasses all and none, everywhere and nowhere, everything and nothing.

The exhibition, made of several site-specific interventions, emphasizes the childlike aspect of their practice by hanging the works at eye level for children. This intentional low-level placement invites viewers, regardless of age, to engage with the art in a more intimate and personal manner. Adults are encouraged to kneel, sit, or bow to connect more deeply with the pieces, reflecting on the simplicity and wonder of a child's view. Through this approach, Kim revisits the nostalgia of childhood, where small falls were minor and unreachable high fruits represented distant dreams. This level of engagement aims to foster a sense of equality and closeness, reminding us of the value of perspective and humility. As Kim suggests, “If I behave superior, I lose. If I kneel down, I gain.

Through this exhibition, Kim invites you to join them in a contemplative journey, encouraging deep listening and empathetic engagement with the art and with one another. Enjoy your exploration and thank you for being part of this shared experience.

The exhibition was accompanied by two texts one by Mia Pattillo and another by Sarah Conlisk.
