THE BRONX SPEAKS: OUR HOME

March 2 – 26, 2016

BronxArtSpace | Andrew Freedman Home

Curated for the Bronx Arts Alliance in conjunction with New York Armory Arts Week 2016

In an intentionally timely manner, The Bronx Speaks: Our Home opens during New York Armory Arts Week 2016 as working class neighborhoods— located in the Bronx and beyond—are continually being “discovered” as inexpensive real estate opportunities for developers. What is overlooked, however, is the art and culture that has flourished within these areas for decades, and the potential for erasure and displacement.

Curated in two spaces—BronxArtSpace in Mott Haven and Andrew Freedman Home on Grand Concourse—the exhibition is intended to function as a platform for artists to “speak,” amplifying multiple voices and perspectives. The concept of home is interpreted and elucidated through the artist’s eye, revealing the dynamism of the Bronx arts scene that’s happening right here, right now.

Featured Artists: Lizzy Alejandro, Sandra Ayala, Alina and Jeff Bliumis, Melissa Calderon, Dennis RedMoon Darkeem, Sharon Lee De La Cruz, Alexis Duque, Charles Esperanza, Daniel Hauben, Felipe Garcia, Ariel Jackson, Coco Lopez, Eric Orr, Emilio Sanchez, Sienide, Luis Stephenberg, Andre Trenier, Osaretin Ugiagbe, Cinnamon Willis, Audra Wolowiec.

Also featuring Bronx Photo League/Bronx Documentary Center: Ed Alvarez, Trevon Blondet, David “Dee” Delgado, Melissa Bunni Elian, Jesus Emmanuel, Giacomo Francia, Michael Kamber, Netza Moreno, Heriberto Sanchez, Jonathan Santiago, Rhynna M. Santos, Adi Talwar, Berthland Tekyi-Berto, Edwin Torres, Elias Williams, Osaretin Ugiagbe.

An installation by Bronx Children’s Museum Dream Big After School Program at PS 49 led by Museum Teaching Artists Natalie Wood and Estelle Maisonett.
